NEC And Motorola To Collaborate On WLAN,
VoIP And Cellular Solution
NEC America, Inc. and Motorola Inc. announced their intent to
collaborate on the development of a converged Wireless Local Area Networks
(WLAN), VoIP and cellular communication solution to create potential cost
savings opportunities, improved user efficiencies and new capabilities for
enterprise customers.
The convergence of voice and data networks, both wired and wireless,
can
bring contiguous voice and data service to users across enterprise
networks,
public cellular networks, and public hotspot WLANs based on 802.11
technologies (commonly referred to as Wi-Fi). The solution will be enabled
by integrating Motorola's core seamless mobility components with NEC's
WLAN
infrastructure and NEAX family of enterprise communication
platforms.
Motorola's components include a dual system Wi-Fi/cellular phone and
mobility
manager that controls the hand-off between local (WLAN) and cellular
networks and dispatch functions.
The solution enables enterprises to achieve cost savings through
reduced
network management expenses, lower usage charges and device consolidation.
User efficiencies may be realized through increased accessibility to the
business network and greater mobility through seamless wireless access
within or outside the enterprise network. Planned capabilities include
mobile access to key business applications such as e-mail, calendars,
corporate directories and enterprise SMS coverage.
"We are very pleased to be collaborating with NEC. Together we are
seeking
to deliver a communication solution that converges cellular networks with
WLANs accessed with a single handset," said Nicholas Labun, vice
president
and general manager for Motorola's WLAN Seamless Mobility Business.
"This
is an exciting step towards realizing Motorola's vision of extending
mobility from the network to the person."
"Teaming with Motorola to seamlessly extend the enterprise into
the wide
area mobile network is a critical component of NEC's real-time
solution,"
said Mike Rosen, general manager of NEC America's Marketing and Sales
Support Division. "Converging cellular and WLAN networks on a single
handset addresses a significant need and adds greater value for our
customers."
