Hughes Software Systems To Offer High-Reliability 3G Solutions For Telecom OEMs On Motorola Platforms

Hughes Software Systems (HSS) announced it has teamed with Motorola to provide advanced third generation (3G) mobile data protocol hardware/software platforms for delivering the wireless mobile data telecom infrastructure for OEMs building gateway GPRS service nodes (GGSN), serving GPRS support nodes (SGSN) and home location registers (HLR).

HSS' software, combined with Motorola Computer Group's CPX 8221 High Availability platform, one of the highest density carrier-grade, high availability CompactPCI platforms in the industry, allows OEMs to rapidly deploy next generation mobile data solutions without the time or expense needed to develop complex communications software systems in-house.

Through this hardware/software combination, coupled with HSS' MAP protocol stack over its SS7 stack, HSS now provides a complete development environment for home location service (HLR) node for UMTS networks on the Motorola CPX 8221 platform.

"We are pleased to deepen our relationship with Motorola and build on the work we have done with our SS7 stack. This is a great value proposition for our OEM customers as the high reliability of the Motorola platform seamlessly combines with high performance software from HSS," said Manoranjan Mohapatra, Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, HSS. " With our market-proven protocol stacks, this combination of hardware, software and system-level integration will provide the flexibility, features and performance that meet and exceed the needs of OEMs."

"Because we are being asked by our OEM customers to provide more complete systems than ever before, it is important for Motorola to partner with organizations like Hughes Software Systems to deliver comprehensive telecom solutions that customers can simply build their applications upon," said Paul Virgo, director of product marketing for Motorola Computer Group. "With telecom technologies changing so quickly, getting our customers to 3G for advanced applications like SGSNs using a proven platform such as the CPX8221 with Hughes' software makes sense. Our goal is to help our customers to maintain an edge in this competitive marketplace."

The CPX8000 family is a carrier-grade platform for operation in Network Equipment Building System (NEBS) and European Telecom Standard Institute (ETSI) environments. It is particularly well suited for switching applications and deployment within unattended sites, thus meeting the requirement of carrier-grade networking, wireless and Internet applications for 99.999% availability (5NINES), or five minutes or less of downtime per year, both planned and unplanned.
