Cisco Releases Carrier-Class IP Edge Router With IPsec And MPLS VPN Functionality

Cisco Systems announced it has enhanced the Cisco 10000 series to offer service providers more options for deploying IP services at the edge of the network. The Cisco 10000 Series now includes IPsec and MPLS Virtual Private Network (VPN) functionality with the Cisco IPsec VPN Service Module -- offering service providers the only carrier-class edge services platform delivering a comprehensive set of VPN services with a high level of performance as well as greater scale and performance in leased line services.

"The Cisco 10000 Series is the most comprehensive IP services aggregation platform available for service providers," said John Goodhue, vice president and general manager of Cisco's Aggregation Business Unit. "With the new integrated IP VPN capabilities and unparalleled high availability -- service providers can now reliably deploy profitable, value-added IP services at the edge of their network."

The Cisco 10000 Series is a family of edge services routers for carriers deploying New World IP services at the edge of their networks for enhanced service flexibility. The newly expanded product family continues to incorporate the most advanced architecture including high availability through a unique hardware design and a unique adaptive network processing powered by Parallel eXpress Forwarding (PXF) technology. The premier aggregation platform in the industry, the Cisco 10000 Series incorporates completely redundant hardware architecture, a critical component in giving service providers 99.999 percent up time.

"The rapid growth of our network access customer base required us to look for devices with higher density of aggregation. At the same time, we needed to ensure that the devices would meet our stringent standards for availability and reliability," said Shankar Ishwar, vice president of Globix Network Services. "To keep up with the pace of demand, and with an eye on deploying value-added services such as VPNs, we evaluated various solutions and determined that the Cisco 10000 best met our critical needs."

Consistent with Cisco's overall VPN strategy, The Cisco 10000 Series now incorporates full-featured IP VPN services for site-to-site, remote access, IPsec and MPLS VPNs -- offering service providers the broadest portfolio of VPN technologies to deliver integrated and flexible VPN solutions for all business customers. For service providers ready to deploy VPN services at the edge of their network, the new Cisco 10000 Series IPsec VPN Service Module now offers industry-leading performance on the only IP aggregator with both IPsec and MPLS VPN capabilities. Using customer proven IPsec technology, each Cisco IPsec VPN Service Module can scale up to 25,000 IPsec tunnels with 3DES throughput of 250 Mbps.

In addition, the new Cisco 10000 Series IPsec VPN Service Module allows service providers to consolidate functionality in one robust edge services router -- saving precious real estate and streamlining management of their network. By outsourcing VPN services, enterprises can focus on their core competencies while leaving the issues of installation, security and management to the service provider.

A Virtual Private Network delivers secure connectivity over a public infrastructure. With an increasing number of businesses using the public Internet as part of their network infrastructure, IP VPNs have become an important alternative to leased lines and modem access. According to the Yankee Group, IP-based VPNs will be used by 70 percent of all companies for up to 90 percent of their data communications needs by 2003.

"Cisco's edge aggregation platform with IPsec and MPLS VPN capabilities offers service providers the flexibility to deploy the broadest range of services to their end user customers," said Kent Dallas, executive vice president of architecture and technology at Intelispan. "With a full suite of IP VPN services integrated with the Cisco 10000, we can now offer site-to-site, remote access and MPLS VPNs to our customers -- while taking advantage of the accelerated services inherent in the Cisco 10000 architecture."

The Cisco 10000 Series, the premier Cisco edge aggregation product family, is designed and developed for the application of high-performance IP services at edge of the service provider network. The Cisco 10000 Series enables service providers to deploy revenue generating IP services using the unmatched value and investment protection of its Parallel eXpress Forwarding (PXF) engine and a broad range of transport interfaces and service modules.

Based on Cisco IOS software, the Cisco 10000 Series is optimized to deliver exceptional throughput on each connection -- enabling Internet service providers to deliver critical services such as quality of service (QoS), access control lists, Multilink PPP (MLPPP), Multiprotocol Label Switching (MPLS), and IP Security virtual private networks (IPsec VPNs).
