National Semiconductor Announces Bluetooth Module For Wireless Personal Area Networks

National Semiconductor Corporation introduced the LMX9814 Bluetooth WPAN (wireless personal area network) module to enable Class 2/3 Bluetooth connectivity in portable communications and computing devices. One of the industry's smallest complete Bluetooth modules, the LMX9814 measures just 10.1 by 14 by 1.9 mm and is ideally suited for the demanding requirements of portable products such as mobile phones, PDAs and laptops. The LMX9814 is also well suited to less space-constrained applications such as desktop computing, printer and scanner products.

"An all-inclusive Bluetooth module that integrates RF, baseband and memory provides a big advantage to OEMs, allowing them to more easily incorporate Bluetooth connectivity into their designs," said Joyce Putscher, Director of Cahners In-Stat Group's Converging Markets and Technologies Research Group. "Companies that develop Bluetooth modules that are easy to design in and are highly-integrated will be key to lowering cost, ultimately driving faster adoption of Bluetooth technology."

"These advantages are further enhanced by National's recently announced Bluetooth Stack Partners Program, which enables customers to pair our module with proven Bluetooth Host Protocol Stacks from National-recommended third party software design houses."

The LMX9814 is based on National's LMX5250 CMOS radio and LMX5100 baseband processor. In addition to full Bluetooth (V1.1) capabilities, the LMX9814 integrates Flash memory, front end filtering, receive/transmit switching, localized supply voltage decoupling, and USB and UART host control interfaces. The LMX9814 employs an external antenna and can accept a wide range of system clocks from 10 to 26MHz, thereby supporting the majority of applications with minimal real-estate, cost and power consumption. The LMX9814 supports Bluetooth Class 2/3 transmit power levels, which specify a nominal transmit power of up to +4 decibels referenced to milliwatt (dBm).
