About 72 percent of the US online adults are using their PCs to listen to audio content, according to a new study tilted “Computer-Sourced Audio Consumption in the Home” conducted by the Consumer Electronics Association (CEA).
As the PC penetration has been increasing and reached 82% of the US households, most preferring PC for TV, DVD or CD player for a home audio experience.
“In the span of a few years, the PC has risen from an enigmatic beige box to what some consumers today might call the epicenter of infotainment in the home," said Steve Koenig, CEA's senior manager of industry analysis.
Households’ craving for quality of audio experience is on rise. When it is quality versus quantity, households are not for just grabbing as many audio files as possible. This is evident from the survey finding that 47 percent of home PC audio users chose quality over quantity. Over a third of audio users said that there was a need for better sound quality.
Music occupied lion’s share of the audio content usage by households with 77% of home PC audio users listening to music for about nine hours a week. Apart from physical media, they are also exploring Internet and digital files to source music content.
Observing the households’ tools to listen to music, the study identified huge potential for the connecting devises. As of now, only nine percent of the home PC audio users connected their PC to home audio systems.
"The PC has claimed its place as a hub of audio content procurement and playback in the home," said Koenig. "The next step is to allow consumers to see the benefits of connecting their PC to their existing home audio system for a more enjoyable home audio experience."
