SanDisk Buys License for Moore Microprocessor Patent

By Spencer D. Chin, TMCnet Web Editor

Flash storage card supplier SanDisk Corp. (News - Alert) has purchased a Moore Microprocessor Patent patent portfolio license from The TPL Group, joining a growing list of consumer electronics companies to purchase the license for developing high-performance, low-cost electronics.

At least two other companies, Japan-based NEC (News - Alert) Corp. and Funai Electric Co. Ltd., have purchased the MMP Portfolio license this year following in the footsteps of numerous other global manufacturers who purchased licenses over the past year.

"More and more manufacturers are recognizing the value and competitive edge that can be realized by becoming early movers in our formative MMP Portfolio Licensing Program," said Mike Davis, senior vice president of licensing for Alliacense, a TPL Group enterprise company. "By design, our MMP Licensing Program rewards early movers in specific industry segments by subjecting subsequent licensees in those same segments to progressively higher royalty rates."

The MMP patent portfolio encompass fundamental design techniques that enable higher performance and lower cost digital electronic systems ranging from cell phones and portable music players to communications infrastructure and medical equipment as well as automobiles, which today utilize dozens of microprocessors.

Seeking to jockey for market position and minimize the likelihood of patent lawsuits, a number of consumer electronics manufacturers have licensed the MNP portfolio. Some include HP, Casio, Fujitsu, Sony, Nikon, Seiko Epson, Pentax, Olympus, Kenwood, Agilent, Lexmark, and Schneider Electric.
