Conexant Intros New Family of System-on-Chip Fax Solutions

By Arun Satapathy, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Conexant Systems (News - Alert), Inc. today announced a new family of system-on-chip (SoC) solutions for fax machines with inkjet, laser, and thermal printing capabilities.

The CX9543X SoCs are offered in a variety of configurations, and support a wide range of optional features, including answering machine, speakerphone, and intercom capabilities. The new devices also include all hardware and software required to develop a complete fax machine.

Conexant's new fax imaging solutions support advanced voice communications capabilities.

“Our new document imaging solutions allow manufacturers to quickly and cost-effectively develop a wide range of products that meet continued consumer demand for feature-rich fax machines with advanced voice communications functionality,” said Rene Hartner, vice president of marketing for Conexant’s Imaging and PC Media business. “Conexant pioneered imaging and modem technologies. We will continue to apply our extensive market knowledge and technical expertise to develop innovative products, and further solidify our No. 1 market position in fax semiconductor solutions.”

CX9543X fax solutions use Conexant’s V.17 SoftFax technology for transmission of documents. The devices feature dual voice analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters (ADCs/DACs), multiple voice inputs and outputs, including a speaker amplifier, a cross-point switch, and additional ADCs for scanner and other analog sensor inputs.

The SoCs also include direct printer control and universal serial bus interfaces. The imaging solutions are powered by a 180 megahertz (MHz) 32-bit RISC processor, a 120MHz digital signal processor-based (DSP) image processor and three 288MHz flexible I/O processors that enable connections to a wide range of peripherals, including scanners, printers, memory cards, and liquid crystal displays (LCDs).

Conexant’s also have proprietary SmartDAA technology, which eliminates the need for costly components required for discrete data access arrangement (DAA) implementations, and lowers bill-of-material costs. The SoCs are based on Conexant’s configurable system solution (CSS (News - Alert)) architecture that allows manufacturers to use a single device for multiple platforms and geographies, further reducing product development costs. Conexant’s imaging product offering includes fax SoCs and datapump solutions.

In a release, Conexant said that, after the acquisition of Freescale’s “SigmaTel (News - Alert)” imaging product lines, it will also offer highly-integrated MFP SoCs for inkjet, laser, and photo printers, and high-performance system solutions for digital photo frames.

Priced from $7 to $15 each in volume quantities, depending on the configuration, the CX9543X fax product family will be available in volume quantities in the fourth calendar quarter of 2008.
