Verizon and Intel Launch Online PC Gaming For TVs

By Niladri Sekhar Nath, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Verizon and Intel Corporation jointed forces to launch Verizon (News - Alert) Games on Demand, a service for consumers that allows them to play popular PC games on their television sets via Intel Viiv technology-based PCs. Users can access the service through the Media Center Edition menu system by selecting the service.

Verizon Games on Demand is based on Intel (News - Alert) Viiv technology platform. The service is equipped with Intel Core 2 Duo processor and Verizon's broadband networks.

“The combination of Intel Viiv technology and Verizon Games on Demand provides consumers with a wide selection of popular gaming experiences for both the PC and the TV, which adds a whole new dimension to online gaming," says Kevin Corbett, vice president of Intel's Digital Home Group and general manager of the company's Content Services Group.

According to the news release, Intel Viiv technology connects the PC to the TV to help consumers manage their games, music and movies with the energy-efficient performance delivered by the Intel Core 2 Duo processor. Several PC and consumer electronics manufacturers and content and service providers have already endorsed the technology.

Other prominent features associated with the Verizon Games on Demand are click-and-play access to a wide variety of popular, full-version PC games.

Meanwhile, both Verizon and Intel have plans to introduce a version of PlayLinc, a new game messenger for enjoying multiplayer games online. PlayLinc comes with various useful features such as free private servers, VoIP integration and a system for players to track when their friends are online.

"We're creating a graphics-rich, 'big-screen' game-playing experience for the entire family," says Colson Hillier, director of new product development for Verizon. “This is an extension of Verizon's commitment to provide customers with the content and service they want, whenever they want it, and however they want to receive it."
