It looks like whoever in charge of Sony’s Twitter page may be in a whole lot of trouble for accidently releasing the PS3 jailbreak code via Twitter. Ironic, because this news comes after Sony recently took legal action against PS3 hackers.
Apparently, the way this all developed was from a 24-year-old techie by the name of Travis la Marr (aka @exiva). He sent a message to the Sony-operated Twitter account @TheKevinButler containing the root code to the PS3, which unlocks the device, along with the challenge, “Come at me, @TheKevinButler.”
What seemed fatuous at first quickly became genius trickery on the part of Marr. Marr’s plan, as someone from Sony’s official account re-tweeted the remarks. Unfortunately for Sony, this blunder allowed over 70,000 of its followersthe access to effectively unlock their PS3 gaming consoles.
The person in control of the Sony account seemed to think la Marr was playing some sort of Twitter-centric game of “Battleship,” and retweeted the code
Discussing what had transpired, in a classic response, la Marr writing on Twitter said, “The irony of this all? …I don’t even own a PS3 #truefact.”
In related news, a new report suggests that Sony Ericsson, a consumer electronics and telecommunications company that manufactures mobile phones, is said to be more deeply invested in Windows Phone 7 than the manufacturer has let on in the past.
A Windows Phone from Sony Ericsson (News - Alert) has been rumored for months, but the phone maker for a while wouldn’t confirm its plans, saying only that it was looking into Microsoft’s (News - Alert) new mobile OS as a possible platform for future devices. A new venture of this sort would definitely increase consumer interest in its smartphones. Charles West is a Web Editor for TMCnet.
