Sony Releases Firmware Version 2.0 for its PlayStation 3

By Raju Shanbhag, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Sony Computer Entertainment has released firmware version 2.0 for its PlayStation 3 console. With the new updates, users can start up their PS3 systems remotely when they want to use their PSP to access stored media over the Internet. The update has new information on the XMB (XrossMediaBar) screen with PlayStation news and updates. You can create music and photo playlists, customize the XMB with custom themes, and add a PlayStationNetwork category to the XMB with this update.

To install the new firmware, PS3 users should connect their console to the Internet and select System Update. They can also download the update to a PC and transfer it to the PS3 using USB storage or other media.

As users can access content on their PS3s from anywhere via the Internet using their PSP, the Remote Start feature in the updated PS3 complements the existing Remote Play functionality. Users do not need to leave their PS3’s on all the time because of this facility. But a report in Digital Trends states that when Remote Start is enabled, PS3’s cooling fan will be running all the time.

“PlayStation 3 is constantly evolving, and this latest firmware is a great example of how we can make existing features such as Remote Play even more user friendly,” said SCEA’s Director of PlayStation Network Operations Eric Lempel.  “These types of updates show the value of PS3 goes beyond your initial purchase, and we’re continuing to evaluate new technology upgrades and consumer interests to develop future firmware updates throughout PS3’s life cycle.”

Users can get updates on news and information about new software releases, hardware news, updates, and content added to the PlayStation Store with the new Information Board feature on the XMB. Sony is also launching a variety of themes online, including ones tied to specific titles and game franchises, which users will have the facility to personalize their XMB with.
