Global-Tech Appliances Inc. has announced it decided to triple the capacity of its complementary metal oxide semiconductor (CMOS) camera module (CCM ( News - Alert)) manufacturing unit to meet the growing demand for CCMs in mainland China.
The CCM unit is run by Global-Tech’s wholly owned subsidiary Global Optics Limited (GOL) in China.
This will be the second time that GOL is increasing production capacity. Prior to implementation of the initial expansion plan, GOL’s production capacity for CCMs was approximately 900,000 units per month.
During the last summer, GOL increased its production capacity to about 1.6 million CCMs per month. Upon completion of the supplementary expansion plan, GOL expects to increase its production capacity again to approximately 2.8 million units per month.
John C.K. Sham, the Company’s President and Chief Executive Officer, said, “We believe that expansion plan is essential as we accelerate our efforts to meet and support anticipated demand from existing and prospective customers.”
The cellular phone market in China is growing beyond expectations.
By increasing the production capacity, GOL hopes to take advantage of the future opportunities in cellular phone components, particularly CCMs.
By the end of fiscal 2009, GOL hopes to produce CCMs worth about $85 million.
