Synaptics Launches Touch Scrolling for Consumer Electronics Devices

By Prabhala Ranga Sai, TMCnet Contributing Editor

Synaptics (News - Alert), a developer of human interface solutions for mobile devices, has come introduced ChiralMotion technology, an advanced gesture that provides an innovative alternative to conventional scrolling.

Gesture recognition capabilities of this technology enhance the experience of the mobile user while scrolling.

Traditional scrolling methods, such as the scrollbar, wheel and scrolling region are more restrictive and less efficient. According to Synaptics, ChiralMotion allows user to initiate precise and fine-tuned scrolling just with one continuous circular motion on any two-dimensional input surface such as Synaptics TouchPad, NavPoint and ClearPad solutions.

Users can also reverse the direction of scrolling just by reversing the circular motion of their finger. A TouchPad enhanced with ChiralMotion makes scrolling simple on long pages on a notebook PC.

ChiralMotion technology goes well with small handheld products such as feature-rich mobile handsets, personal navigation systems and personal media players that require easy access for entertainment, music and other digital files.

"ChiralMotion is another powerful example of Synaptics technology designed to make the user experience most intuitive and rewarding in notebook and entertainment devices," said Mark Vena, Vice President of Synaptics' PC Business Unit. "ChiralMotion is part of Synaptics' growing library of gestures developed to create an enjoyable user experience by making complex technology easier to use."

IDC (News - Alert) predicted touch-based interface technology would dramatically impact PCs and other technology devices in 2007 as people look for more intuitive innovations around human interface for more sophisticated devices.
