Centillium Communications’ Mustang 200 is a breakthrough system-on-a-chip (SoC) technology for Ethernet Passive Optical Networks (EPONs). It addresses the complex needs expressed by service providers deploying customer premises equipment (CPE) in EPON.
Together with Centillium’s optical line terminal (OLT) chip partner for Central Office (CO) applications, Colt, or interoperable solutions from other vendors, Mustang supports all the protocol requirements to ensure error free, bandwidth efficient data transmissions over EPON networks.
The Mustang 200 is the first SoC to enable multi-vendor interoperability between EPON optical network units (ONUs) and OLTs, a critical factor in reducing deployment risks and costs for system vendors and service providers alike. The Mustang 200’s advanced queuing and traffic management capabilities also benefit service providers by enabling them to offer triple play voice, data and video services and realize additional revenues.
The Mustang 200 chip provides significant advantages in deploying fiber-to-the-premises (FTTP), including the highest level of integration, which reduces Bill of Materials (BOM) costs. The Mustang 200 is shipped with a full featured software package which may be used without modification to build a complete ONU. This approach relieves major software development, saving development cost and shortening time-to-market. A broad set of application program interfaces (APIs) may also be utilized if the systems vendor wishes to individualize the ONU and build in incremental value. Modifications and updates to this code may be realized via the built in remote software download capability.
