The CPCI/C5421 board features four processor clusters, referred to as Packet Processing Units (PPUs). Each is a self-contained gateway and is comprised of five 2000-MIPS, dual-core TMS320C54x DSPs and a Motorola MPC860P processor. The MPC860P in each PPU is able to take control of data movement and network interfacing, allowing the DSPs to carry out voice and fax processing tasks uninterrupted (up to 40 channels per PPU) optimizing the board's processing performance and enabling it to meet the high bandwidth demands of packet-based applications.
