Lucent Announces Single-Chip Internet Telephone
Lucent Technologies Microelectronics Group has announced Phone-On-A-Chip, a
single-chip solution for Internet telephones. By integrating multiple system-level
functions on a single chip, Lucent has the capability to design a solution that reduces
the electronics cost of available Internet telephones by approximately 30 percent.
Lucent's solution incorporates Bell Labs technology that enables higher quality voice
telephony over local area packet networks by giving priority to real-time voice traffic.
The planned architecture for Lucent's solution involves integrating 13 electronic
functions onto a single chip. One chip will house the digital signal processor (DSP1627),
which is for speakerphone echo cancellation and video compression. The second chip is a
microprocessor, which is for voice-over-IP (VoIP) signaling and network management.

PUREDATA Announces SatisFAXtion
PUREDATA has announced the release of the SatisFAXtion 8-Port PCI Remote
Access Server (RAS) Fax/Modem Card. Integrating multiple ports of voice, fax, and V.90/56K
data modems with communications processing hardware on a PCI card, PUREDATA SatisFAXion
RAS utilizes self-configuring Microsoft Plug-and-Play systems configuration. The PUREDATA
SatisFAXtion 8-Port PCI RAS includes onboard dedicated acceleration hardware and serial
ports that eliminate data corruption errors and poor throughput common in high load
situations. To eliminate modem compatibility problems, the PUREDATA 8-Port PCI RAS is
based on the industry-standard Rockwell modem chipset.

Telcordia Announces Telcordia Call Agent Software
Telcordia Technologies (formerly Bellcore) has unveiled the Telcordia Call
Agent software, which operates with IP gateways to translate call set-up and tear-down
functions with the Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN). Analog voices on the
telephone are digitized and packetized by the Cisco "residential" gateway for
transmission over the network with the receiving gateway reversing the process, presenting
the listener with a "PSTN quality" listening experience. The Call Agent software
acts as a local office virtual switch, providing end-to-end signaling for various
equipment vendors' IP gateways using Telcordia Media Gateway Control Protocol (MGCP). The
Call Agent software supports protocols like SS7 and existing features such as E-911, 411,
local number portability (LNP), and toll-free services.
