DZS Velocity V6 Fiber Access System is Being Deployed by Ontario's Vianet

By Alex Passett February 27, 2024

Last month on Smart City Sentinel (one of our many sister sites), I penned a story regarding the work that DZS and Andorix set in motion to modernize historical landmarks via transformative smart building designs featuring fiber connections in place of copper-based infrastructure. (Read in full here.) DZS recognized how its services could complement Andorix’s to make this smart-oriented support possible, thus making possible this dramatically improved connectivity, as well as operational and capital cost-savings and overall enriched user experiences.

With this in mind, DZS (DASAN Zhone Solutions Inc.) made another announcement just last week; this one entails work with Canadian full-service telecommunications solutions provider Vianet.

The long-story-short scoop:

DZS announced that it is working with Vianet (News - Alert) to deploy its DZS Velocity V6 fiber access system. (Another way DZS services complement others, as fate would have it.) This, for residential and business customers alike, will deliver what’s been hailed as “some of the absolute fastest broadband speeds available in northern Ontario.” By leveraging this system, Vianet has a clear path to multi-gigabit Passive Optical Networking (PON) services, including the symmetric 10 Gb/s-capable XGS-PON.

Further technical details and competitive advantages offered therein, according to DZS, include the following:

  • Better Performance and Capacity: The V6 is among the industry’s, quote, “only platforms with an architecture scaling to nearly a terabit of non-blocking switching capacity per slot,” with the ability to deliver maximum performance for today’s 10 Gb-class XGS-PON technologies to more than 24,000 subscribers from the same chassis/line card.
  • Future-Readiness: The V6 supports simple in-place upgrades to the 10, 50 and 100 Gb/s PON and next-gen access technologies while maintaining non-blocking performance for all service types (versus complete system replacement that may be required by other vendors).
  • Standards and Software-Based: The V6 is “tightly aligned with global standards” and complemented by renowned DZS Cloud software solutions for orchestration, automation, service assurance and Wi-Fi experience management.
  • Operational Simplicity: The V6 provides the operational simplicity of a chassis-based system with the flexibility (and advantages) of disaggregation.
  • Support for Multiple ONT and Gateways: The V6 offers a wide array of support for Optical Networking Terminals (ONTs) and gateways with “cutting-edge Wi-Fi and proven third-party interoperability.”

Per Will Gasteiger (News - Alert), President of Vianet:

“We are in a fiercely competitive market, so we want to ensure that we are always on the leading edge of delivering our customers the fastest voice, data and video speeds available. DZS has served us well as a strategic partner and is an integral part of our success by continually delivering the innovative and open solutions that we need to successfully compete. With them, we can deliver what we believe to be the most complete and fastest communications experience in northern Ontario.”

And per Jeff Liening, Senior Vice President of Americas Sales at DZS:

“Vianet has built their reputation on providing excellent customer service and delivering great communications experiences to their customers, and DZS has been a proud partner helping to power networks like theirs for more than two decades. Armed with the Velocity V6, Vianet can continue to lead their market with multi-gigabit broadband services enabled via XGS-PON technology delivering a superior communications service experience ready for the next-generation applications of today and tomorrow – from latency-sensitive, ultra-high definition gaming and extended reality experiences to high-performance remote working/learning and advanced telehealth services.”
