SecurityWeek Analysis: Over 450 Cybersecurity M&A Deals Announced in 2022


SecurityWeek, a leading provider of cybersecurity news and information to global enterprises, today published its analysis of cybersecurity mergers and acquisition (M&A) activity for 2022.

SecurityWeek's cybersecurity M&A database includes information o 455 deals announced in 2022, a slight increase compared to the 435 cataloged in 2021.



A majority of the deals involved organizations in the United States, followed by the United Kingdom.

Financial details were made public for 62 deals, with transactions totaling more than $63 billion in disclosed deal value. Ten companies were acquired for more than $1 billion, roughly the same as in 2021.


The most significant deal for the cybersecurity industry was Google's acquisition of Mandiant for $5.4 billion.

Private equity firms continued to invest big in cybersecurity, with 19 deals announced in 2022. Thoma Bravo acquired SailPoint ($6.9 billion), Ping Identity ($2.8 billion), and Forgerock ($2.3 billion), and sold Barracuda Networks to KKR ($4 billion). Vista Equity Partners acquired two companies: KnowBe4 ($4.6 billion) and Citrix ($16.5 billion, with Evergreen Coast Capital).

Many cybersecurity M&A deals in 2022 involved companies that provide managed security services (MSSP), surpassing governance, risk management and compliance (GRC), which was the top category in 2021. Many deals also involved network security, identity, and data protection firms.

Nearly 40 mergers and acquisitions involved government contractors.
