Cybersecurity Pioneer Cyemptive Technologies Warns of the Danger of Relying on Backups to Restore Systems Following a Ransomware Attack and Provides the First Reliable Solution to Correct This Problem

Cyemptive Technologies, Inc., a provider of pre-emptive cybersecurity products and technology and winner of the Department of Homeland Security's national competition for most innovative border security-related solution in the market, today warned entities of the danger of relying on backups to restore systems following a ransomware attack and announced that Cyemptive now provides the first reliable solution to correct this problem.

According to industry research, ransomware attacks are on the rise, and companies are increasingly succumbing to more sophisticated and expensive ransomware attacks at a cost of more than $7.5 billion in 2019. Current industry solutions, which use big data analytics along with artificial intelligence, machine learning and human intervention, attempt to reduce ransomware detection time from months to even days; however, they cannot keep up because data exfiltration happens in seconds to minutes - not in time to prevent ransomware infiltration. Furthermore, backing up data is not an effective solution - backed up data that includes ransomware will result in either loss of significant backed up data or re-infection of the system if used to restore.

"Entities that back up their systems have a false sense of cybersecurity when assuming they can cleanly rinstitute their system following a ransomware lock-out," said Bryan Seely, Cyemptive's Senior Security Architect and well-known cybersecurity author and expert. "In reality, particularly with sleeper ransomware, the entity's backup will likely still contain ransomware, resulting in loss of backed up data and/or the ransomware will be re-introduced when used to restore the system. Current technology relies on identifying and attempting to deal with attacks after they have occurred, and will not detect ransomware during the backup process."

"We have seen these types of attacks shifting from a shorter-term focus on real-time attacks to longer-term strategic attacks that also ensures backup infection occurs for the purpose of increasing ransom demands and the probability of payout," said Rob Pike, CEO and founder of Cyemptive Technologies. "It is important that Cyemptive shares our knowledge of this threat and informs entities that Cyemptive's revolutionary technology, Cyemptive Enterprise Scanner, can detect ransomware both prior to initiating the backup process as well as within existing backup files to ensure integrity and security of all files."
