Attorney/Legal Commentator Troy Slaten Announces Candidacy for Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Seat #145Troy Slaten, a partner with the Law Offices of Floyd Skeren Manukian Langevin, and Los Angeles native, is running for Los Angeles Superior Court Seat #145. The election is March 3, 2020 with absentee ballots available Feb. 3 and early voting beginning Feb. 22, giving people a ten day window to vote. Slaten has felt the call to serve since he regularly volunteered and engaged in philanthropic activities during his 25 years as a child actor - beginning at the age of 5 on "Cagney & Lacey" and culminating in starring in "Parker Lewis Can't Lose" until he began college at UCLA. Following undergrad, Slaten attended Pepperdine Law School during which he clerked for the Los Angeles County District Attorney's office. He says, "Since the first day I stepped into the courtroom as a certified law clerk I aspired to become a bench officer." As a Los Angeles Superior Court Judge, Slaten would focus on being a fair and impartial judge and work to overhaul prison reform and criminal justice reform. Los Angeles has the dishonor of having the highest incarceration rate of any county in the free world. While his opponent is a prosecutor who has engaged in "egregious prosecutorial misconduct"1 and counts every person put in prison for the maximum amount of time a win, Slaten conversely would be a champion for alternative sentencing and collaborative courts. He believes rehabilitation and treatment should be our goal rather tha incarceration of those who need treatment and social services. Slaten wants to end the school to prison pipeline. He explains, "Mass incarceration disproportionately affects young men and women of color. It's disenfranchising them. It's giving them a red scarlet letter that they'll never be able to shake, and it will effect their ability to get jobs, to get housing, to be able to vote and to be able to participate in society, potentially forever. Judges can make a big difference. That's why defense attorneys are getting elected as DAs, because people are frustrated by the status quo and prosecutors trying to seek maximum sentences, as opposed to getting people out of this recidivism turnstile by preparing people who are in custody, who are incarcerated, to be able to successfully reintegrate once they're out and try to keep people from being put into the system in the first place." During his 15-year career as an attorney, Slaten has amassed diverse legal experience from criminal, civil, and litigation to administrative, business transaction, employment, worker's comp and general business cases. He currently represents 170 victims of the 2017 Las Vegas mass shooting at the Rt 91 Festival (which garnered the third largest settlement in United States history) and as a political pundit he's made over 500 television appearances on networks including CNN, HLN and Fox News as well as regularly appearing as a legal analyst on Nancy Grace and Dr. Drew Pinsky. He has served as a Temporary Judge for the Los Angeles Superior Court many times over the last few years and says, "It's been one of the greatest honors of my life to serve the public in the capacity of Temporary Judge and it would be a tremendous honor to continue serving the People of the County of Los Angeles as a Superior Court Judge."
