Fairhair Alliance disbands following publication of Fairhair Specification

PISCATAWAY, N.J., Oct. 23, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Following the publication of the Fairhair Specification, and its adoption by various standards-developing organizations (SDOs), the members of the Fairhair Alliance have agreed to dissolve the organization effective November 1, 2019.

Fairhair is an alliance of leading companies from the lighting, building-automation, semiconductor and IT industries that aims to facilitate the Internet of Things (IoT) in commercial buildings. It was founded four years ago by Cisco, Lutron, Osram, Siemens, Signify and Silicon Labs.

Fairhair reached a significant milestone earlier this year with the publication of its main deliverable, the Fairhair Specification. This defines a common Internet Protocol (IP)-based network infrastructure that enables secure, streamlined building-automation systems. The Specification is based on open standards and is independent of the application ecosystem. The Specification can be downloaded from the Fairhair website (www.fairhair-alliance.org/specification).

“With the completion of this very important specification, the Fairhair mission is accomplished,” said Ruud van Bokhorst, Secretary-General of the Fairhair Alliance. “It is now time for our liaison partners to take this work forward.”

The Fairhair Specification will be adopted by several SDOs, notably the Open Connectivity Foundation (OCF). Fairhair and OCF have agreed that OCF will continue to work on and enhance the Fairhair Specification. OCF will form a Fairhair Working Group, and intends to submit the Fairhair Specification to ISO for publication as an international standard.

Other SDOs—including KNX, the Thread Group and the Zigbee Alliance—intend to use the published version of the Fairhair Specification, and build its features into their own standards.

About the Fairhair Alliance

The Fairhair Alliance is a global association of leading companies from the lighting, building-automation, semiconductor and IT industries that aims to facilitate the Internet of Things (IoT) in commercial buildings. Fairhair envisions a future where the building-automation and lighting-control industries use IoT technologies to build secure, cost-effective and scalable systems. This is enabled by the use of a single, unified, IP-based network infrastructure in commercial buildings, as defined in the Fairhair Specification.
