Brandman University & theDevMasters Align to Offer Certificate in Artificial Intelligence

As corporations, small businesses, nonprofits and government agencies gear-up to scale-up the use of artificial intelligence (AI), Brandman University today announced it is partnering with theDevMasters (tDM) to offer a Certificate in Data Science to help Californians build resiliency in today's rapidly changing workplace.

"I hear a lot of chatter about the future of work and how artificial intelligence will someday reshape the nature of work in America. In reality, AI has a sizeable footprint in the here and now. What makes this partnership so exciting is that we are committed to helping people gain access to valuable credentials today, we are not waiting on the future," said Gary Brahm, chancellor of Brandman University.

Although Brandman is known for serving adults through hybrid and fully online programs and tDM is known for its bootcamp style instruction, this partnership will meld an applied labs approach to developing the next generation of data scientists through on ground instruction delivered within Brandman's multi-campus university system. Students will gain simultaneous access to Brandman's campuses, lifetime access to repeat a project or a course anytime, career and support services, and tDM's nationally top-ranked Data Science program. The Mastering Science with Deep Learning program will be offered through Brandman's School of Extended Education. The first cohort of students will begin on Aug. 2019 at co-located spaces at both Brandman's and tDM's Irvine campuses. Program offerings throughout additional Brandman campuses are expected to launch in 2020.

"Our partnership with Bradman is in alignment with our company vision of developing artificial intelligence, machine learning practitioners and researchers within a university setting. We are excited to partner with Brandman and grow with them in the coming years," said Arshad Khan, tDM founder and chief scientist. "This partnership will develop high quality data scientists who will make an immediate impact for their organizations."

A 2017 McKinsey Global Institute report, Artificial Intelligence the Next Digital Frontier, states that machine learning and a subfield called deep learning are at the heart of many recent advances in artificial intelligence applications and they attracted almost 60% of all AI related investment from outside the industry in 2016. The report further highlights that AI promises benefits, but it also poses urgent challenges across firms, developers, government, and workers. A key report conclusion is the workforce should be reskilled to exploit AI rather than compete with it.

"Both Brandman and tDM look to build educational programs that arm people with skills that are aligned with and immediately ready for today's job market," said Ricardo Lorenzana, dean of Brandman's School of Extended Education. "This certificate will demonstrate to employers that the certificate holder has a working knowledge of machine learning, chatbots, applied data and much more. Similarly, certificate holders can expect to gain competitive advantages as AI technologies become even more prevalent in a variety of workplaces."

Mastering Data Science and Deep Learning is an open access program. A college degree is not a pre-requisite. Brandman and theDevMasters do anticipate the demand for this certificate will stem from individuals who are college educated, are 35 and older, and are currently in the workforce. The certificate will cost students or their employers about $14,995 and the program is not eligible for state or federal financial aid. Students can anticipate a class duration of 12 weeks. In June 2019, Burning Glass Technologies reported there were 34,338 data science job postings in the past 12 months, anticipated growth over the next 10 years is 19%, and the median salary is $116,198.

"This partnership allows our organizations to develop a strong co-branded offering to the marketplace. Unlike other college and university certificate programs we've developed a true partnership where students will receive support from both the university and theDevMasters," said Jessica Acosta Jaquez, vice president of marketing and sales, and co-founder, at tDM.
