Children and Screens and Stony Brook University Co-Host a Conversation with Researchers on Kids and MediaThis Thursday, May 16th, at 7pm, Children and Screens: Institute of Digital Media and Child Development, a national research organization, will host a conversation with experts on the digital media effects on child and adolescent health, in partnership with Stony Brook University at its Charles B. Wang Center Theater. Six leading researchers, clinicians, and child health experts will discuss what we know and what we need to learn about the impact of digital media on developing minds and bodies. JAMA Pediatrics Editor-in-Chief Dimitri A. Christakis, M.D., M.P.H., will moderate the international panel, including newly named Canada Research Chair in Child and Family Clinical Psychology, Dillon T. Browne, Ph.D., Jennifer A. Emond, MS, Ph.D., from Dartmouth Geisel School of Medicine, founding Editor-in-Chief of Sleep Health, Lauren Hale, Ph.D., Canada Research Chair in Determinants of Child Development, Sheri Madigan, Ph.D., and expert in internet addiction, Hans-Jürgen Rumpf, Ph.D., from the University of Lübeck, Germany. Parents are encouraged to submit questions when they register. This interactive discussion will also feature live audience questions. The special evening is part of a public lecture series running concurrently with interdisciplinary research retreats being hostd by Children and Screens. From Friday through Saturday, a dozen experts will convene at Children and Screens' headquarters to collaborate on the design and development of a Media Impact Screening Toolkit (MIST). A significant need exists for researchers, clinicians, practitioners, and educators to assess youth media use and recognize the relationship between various presenting health concerns that are increasingly common but often unidentified as being connected to screen use. Children and Screens and the MIST workgroup are addressing this gap by developing a novel screening toolkit to use in research and clinical settings and to help inform diagnosis and decision making in a variety of contexts. This innovative suite of instruments will be validated, published, and distributed internationally to a wide variety of stakeholders, including pediatricians, public health experts, child psychologists, child and adolescent psychiatrists, and educators.
