Ladder Aligns with Healthcare Industry Leaders to Reinforce the Human Connection in Health and Wellness

Ladder, the digital marketplace for health and wellness coaching, today announced that it has established a Healthcare Advisory Board, featuring three industry veterans, including Dan Messina as chairman, Charlene Frizzera, and Dr. Abbie Leibowitz. The advisory board will provide strategic guidance as the health and wellness platform pursues new growth opportunities within the healthcare industry, including bridging the gap between healthcare and consumer fitness.

"At Ladder, we are putting real-life human connections in step with digital technology to make health and wellness truly attainable for consumers," said Brett Maloley, founder and CEO at Ladder. "We know that helping people stay accountable with their health goals can be reinforced and supported by coaching and believe it's an approach that needs to be far more pervasive in healthcare delivery. We are eager to work with some of the brightest minds in the industry to achieve better outcomes for individuals and, at a larger scale, to help combat some of the chronic conditions crippling today's society."

Dan Messina is a healthcare business veteran. He was most recently the co-president of Health Advocate, where he helped transform the startup into a nationally recognized healthcare advocacy and services company with nearly 50 million users. He also previously was CEO and president of Magellan (News - Alert) Health Services, a Fortune 500 company and one of the largest behavioral health and employee assistance companies in the world. Prior to Magellan, he was head of business strategy for Aetna, where he helped engineer the transition of the company from a multi-line insurer to a health insurer. Mr. Messina also has held various financial positions, including CFO of Aetna Healthcare and director of insurance reporting at Cigna.

Charlene Frizzera s currently the president, CEO and co-founder of CF Health Advisors, a health policy and business strategy advisory firm. She brings to Ladder extensive and in-depth policy and operational knowledge from her 30-year career as the acting administrator for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS). She also has held the positions of chief operating officer of CMS, deputy director of the Center for Medicaid and State Operations, and regional administrator of the Philadelphia Regional Office, as well as various other positions in the Medicaid and Medicare programs.

Dr. Abbie Leibowitz is a nationally recognized leader in the healthcare industry. He is co-founder, chief medical officer and president emeritus of Health Advocate. Prior to co-founding Health Advocate, he was executive vice president for digital health strategy and business development at Medscape, where he established the company's healthcare data and information services group. Dr. Leibowitz has served as chief medical officer for Aetna Healthcare, where he was responsible for directing and developing the company's patient management, clinical activities and relationships with hundreds of thousands of physicians, hospitals, and other healthcare providers.

"The human element always has been and will be the most critical component in healthcare delivery. Patients gravitate toward physicians that they know and trust, and choose hospitals that they are familiar with," said Dan Messina. "Ladder incorporates that human element - its coaches - into its design and use, while supporting two other increasingly important phenomena we're seeing emerge: the personalization of care, and wellness as a driver for better health outcomes. Ladder is the perfect model for the next generation of healthcare delivery."

Dr. Abbie Leibowitz added, "Engaging consumers and motivating them to make the lifestyle changes that lead to positive health outcomes is a huge challenge. By personalizing the relationship with a coach, emphasizing ease-of-use and providing always-on availability, Ladder does more than just eliminate the barriers to an exercise routine. It encourages people to actually engage and sustain it over time, which can have a dramatic effect on the overall level of consumer health."
