U.S. Cellular Announces New Nonprofit Relationship with JASON Learning

U.S. Cellular (News - Alert) is announcing its new nonprofit relationship with JASON Learning, an education-focused organization with headquarters based in Virginia. As part of its commitment to advancing science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education, U.S. Cellular worked with JASON Learning to create a custom STEM-focused design thinking challenge targeted to students in its markets.

This "Storm Sanctuary" challenge, referred to as a "mission", inspires students to create a connected space for communities facing natural disasters. The mission will launch in Tulsa, Oklahoma and Milwaukee, Wisconsin school districts for the 2018-2019 school year. JASON Learning will host the mission on its website where it will be accessible to all free of charge.

"We are very excited to work with JASON Learning to positively impact hundreds of thousands of youth each year, helping to inspire their interest in STEM education" said Deirdre Drake, executive vice president and chief human resources officer at U.S. Cellular. "With having our unique mission hosted on the JASON Learning website, our associates and anyone interested can create volunteer opportunities within their communities or even execute the project at home with their families."

Founded by Dr. Robert Ballard - the famed explorer and oceanographer who discovered the Titanic in 1985 - JASON Learning develops engaging, real, and rigorous award-winning curriculum for students from kindergarten through high school. Studies have shown that students who participate in these missions significantly improve academic achievement and attitudes toward STEM careers.

"Teaming up with U.S. Cellular was the perfect collaboration as the company's promotion of STEM education aligns with our objective to present students with real-world situations they can solve with applications of STEM thinking," said Eleanor Smalley, President and CEO of JASON Learning. "The "Storm Sanctuary" Mission is a creative and engaging way to continue to ignite young people's interest in STEM not only in the classroom but in everyda life."

U.S. Cellular has a longstanding commitment to the community and education. The company has contributed more than $13.2 million to K-12 STEM education since 2009. In 2017, U.S. Cellular associates volunteered at more than 185 events and are committed to volunteering 35,000 hours in local communities again this year.
