Government of Canada Invests in Expanding Market Opportunities

QUEBEC CITY, Oct. 11, 2018 /CNW/ - Canadian wood is playing a key role in the growing global bioeconomy, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and supporting the transition to a low-carbon economy. Getting wood from our sustainably managed forests to world markets delivers economic benefits while creating good, middle-class jobs.

The Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos, Minister of Families, Children and Social Development, and Joël Lightbound, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Finance, on behalf of Canada's Minister of Natural Resources, the Honourable Amarjeet Sohi, today announced over $700,000 in funding for the Quebec Wood Export Bureau (QWEB) to help bring Quebec wood products to global markets.

The funding, which is provided through Natural ResourcesCanada's Expanding Markets Opportunities Program, seeks to:

  • increase awareness of Canadian wood products around the world;
  • grow Canada's presence in international wood markets; and
  • promote the use of Canadian wood in both traditional and non-traditional construction.

The Quebec Wood Export Bureau is a non-profit organization created in 1996 whose mission is to develop export markets for wood products from Quebec, to ensure market access for these products and to promote the use of wood.

Quote

"Today's announcement will allow the Quebec region to increase its visibility abroad in the wood products sector while creating economic growth. This is good news for middle-class families and for those who work in this sector."

The Honourable Jean-Yves Duclos
Minister of Families, Children and Social Development
