Project Management Institute Announces Finalists of the 2018 PMI Project of the Year Award

Today, Project Management Institute (PMI) announced the finalists of 2018 PMI Project of the Year Award. The winner will be announced on Saturday, October 6 during a gala at the PMI Global Conference 2018 - North America in Los Angeles.

The PMI Professional Awards Gala and dinner is an annual celebration of project, program, and portfolio management - and the industry stars who are not only advancing profession and their organizations, but enabling the evolution of their communities and the business landscape. Based on nominations from our global membership, PMI and the PMI Educational Foundation will honor those who represent the best of the best from across the world of project management.

Since 1974, the prestigious PMI Professional Awards have honored organizations and individuals whose passion, talent, and expertise have made the greatest contributions to the project management profession or to PMI.

PMI Project of the Year Award - The PMI Project of the Year Award recognizes the large and complex project that best delivers superior performance of project management practices, superior organizational results, and positive impacts on society.

Finalist: Horizonte 2, Fibria Celulose S/A (Três Lagoas, Mato Grosso do Sul, Brazil)
The Brazilian paper company launched a US$2.7 billion project in 2015 to create the world's largest bleached-eucalyptuspulp production line. Challenges included hiring and activating 9,000 workers in a remote part of the country. The project was completed two months early, US$500 million under budget and without a serious accident.

Finalist: McDonald's Digital Acceleration, McDonald's Corporation (Oak Brook, Illinois, USA)
McDonald's CEO told shareholders that in nine months the restaurant chain would have a mobile order-and-pay app at 20,000 outlets worldwide. The team completed the project one month ahead of schedule and under budget. The app has accrued 20 million registered users in the U.S. alone.

Finalist: Project Legacy - Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System Replacement Medical Center Activation, Southeast Louisiana Veterans Health Care System (New Orleans, Louisiana, USA)
New Orleans veterans and their families lost their healthcare facility after Hurricane Katrina destroyed it. The new facility, dubbed Project Legacy as a tribute to veterans, opened on time and under budget. In its first 18 months, it completed 500,000+ outpatient encounters, 1,000+ surgical procedures, and 10,000+ bed days of care.
