Three Providers of Virtual Routers Named IDC Innovators

International Data Corporation (IDC) today published an IDC (News - Alert) Innovators report profiling three companies with compelling and differentiated virtual router solutions. The three companies named IDC Innovators are 128 Technology (News - Alert), 6WIND, and DRIVENETS.

A virtual router is a virtual or software instantiation of a hardware router. It is, in other words, a software function that replicates in software the functionality of a hardware-based Layer 3 IP router. The key advantages of using a virtual router accrue from the decoupling of the hardware from the software. The software can be hosted on any hardware and moved from one hardware host to another depending on need. It can be upgraded independently of hardware and can be integrated with other network functions software more easily to deliver a network service dynamically.

"Virtual routing is a foundational virtual network function (VNF) in any carrier network functions virtualization (NFV) deployment and has come to the forefront as communications service providers contemplate cloud architectures across their wireline and wireless infrastructures," said Rajesh Ghai, research director, Carrier Network Infrastructure at IDC. "Hence, IDC does expect virtual routing to ride the curve of NFV deployments and grow at a rapid pace over the foreseeable future. While a number of virtual router solutions are available in the market, we believe these three emerging vendors have the potential to benefit from secular growth trends in the carrier network infrastructure marketplace."

128 Technology has the onlysession-based router in the industry, which eliminates the need for network tunnels and overlays for security, and enables improved network performance, greater responsiveness, higher scalability, and better hardware utilization.

6WIND uses the industry-standard key software abstraction layer (DPDK) to enable virtual network functions to be hosted on commodity hardware with a variety of deployment options suitable for high performance use cases.

DRIVENETS leverages Web-scale cloud design principles such as containerized SDN services, shared infrastructure, and commodity multivendor hardware to achieve extreme port density, a consolidated control plane, and enhanced agility and resilience.

The report, IDC Innovators: Virtual Routers, 2018 (IDC #US44199317), profiles three emerging vendors with compelling and differentiated virtual router solutions.

About IDC Innovators
IDC Innovators reports present a set of vendors - under $100 million in revenue at time of selection - chosen by an IDC analyst within a specific market that offer an innovative new technology, a groundbreaking approach to an existing issue, and/or an interesting new business model. It is not an exhaustive evaluation of all companies in a segment or a comparative ranking of the companies. Vendors in the process of being acquired by a larger company may be included in the report provided the acquisition is not finalized at the time of publication of the report. Vendors funded by venture capital firms may also be included in the report even if the venture capital firm has a financial stake in the vendor's company.
