According to the IAPP, 500,000 U.S. companies, including a large number of small- and medium-sized businesses, will need to comply with the CCPA, the new U.S. privacy law that will go into effect on Jan. 1, 2020. As it is currently written, the act states companies must inform consumers about the categories of personal information to be collected and the purposes of its use at or before the point of collection. The law also gives California residents several new rights over their data, including the right to request information about the sources and purposes of personal information collection, the right of deletion of personal information and the right to 'opt-out' of the sale of their personal information.

The California Consumer Privacy Act of 2018 Initial Planning Assessment provides companies a tool to prepare for the new law, based on its current text. The assessment evaluates how the CCPA may impact organizational operations and gives companies insight into their privacy program readiness. OneTrust will continue to update the assessment for users of the freely distributed IAPP tool and other enterprise customers based on anticipated guidance and changes to the law. IAPP members can access the tool through the IAPP resources portal and other companies can request the assessment for free from the OneTrust website.

"The California Consumer Privacy Act will require many organizations to examine, and perhaps adjust, the way they collect and handle personal data before it comes into force in 2020," said IAPP President and CEO J. Trevor Hughe. "While the law may not be fully baked yet, using tools like OneTrust's can help organizations get started on understanding new compliance obligations and planning responses."

"While we expect the California Consumer Privacy Act text will evolve before the 2020 deadline, this assessment gives businesses a tool to understand how their business processes may be impacted by the new law," said Kabir Barday, OneTrust CEO and Fellow of Information Privacy (FIP). "Preparing for new privacy regulations can cause operational and financial challenges, especially for small- and medium-sized businesses. The IAPP-OneTrust Initial Planning Assessment provides these companies a free solution to benchmark their CCPA readiness and helps them prepare for 2020."
