UCO Computer Science, Engineering, Engineering Physics Programs Receive Accreditation(Targeted News Service Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) EDMOND, Okla., Aug. 29 -- The University of Central Oklahoma issued the following news release: The University of Central Oklahoma's bachelor's of science degree programs in electrical engineering and mechanical engineering recently were accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission for ABET, the recognized accreditor of college and university programs in applied science, computing, engineering and engineering technology. Accreditation demonstrates a program's commitment to providing its students with a quality education. "The faculty in the Department of Engineering and Physics are delighted to offer programs which prepare our graduates to successfully compete in the local and global job market, and make a difference in their careers," said Mohamed Bingabr, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Engineering and Physics. In addition to these new accreditations, the Computing Accreditation Commission for ABET awarded reaccreditation to the bachelor's of science degree program in computer science, while the Engineering Accreditation Commission also reaccredited the university's biomedical engineering and engineering physics programs. "ABET accreditation is a rigorous quality assurance process under which services and operations of the computer science major are evaluated to determine if ABET standards are met. This external process is characterized by objectivity, comprehensiveness and currency. We are pleased to receive reaccreditation from ABET, which is a demonstration of our commitment to our constituents, including students, parents, donors and taxpayers," said Gang Qian, Ph.D., chair of the Department of Computer Science. Accreditation is a voluntary, peer-review process that requires programs to undergo comprehensive, periodic evaluations. The evaluations, conducted by teams of volunteer professionals working in industry, government, academe and private practice within the ABET disciplines, focus on program curricula, faculty, facilities, institutional support and other important areas. One of the key elements of ABET accreditation is the requirement that programs continuously improve the quality of education provided. As part of the continuous improvement requirement, programs set specific, measurable goals for their students and graduates, assess their success at reaching those goals, and improve their programs based on the results of their assessment. In addition to providing colleges and universities a structured mechanism to assess, evaluate and improve their programs, accreditation also helps students and their parents choose quality college programs, enables employers and graduate schools to recruit graduates they know are well-prepared, and assists registration, licensure and certification boards in screening applicants.
