All GEMS schools have robust IT networks, which include cutting-edge registration procedures and monitoring software. This allows network engineers to trace any inappropriate use should this arise. Notwithstanding the technical safeguards in place, we recognise that the most effective way to ensure the appropriate use of digital tools by students is excellent education. This is particularly important, since students actually spend a lot more of their time away from school, where no such safeguards may be in place. They need to be aware of what constitutes appropriate use and, crucially, how to stay safe online – whether or not they are being monitored. Ask your school about their Digital Citizenship / Appropriate Use policies and how this subject is being taught within the curriculum. How can we monitor children's use at home with regards to Internet usage? There are a number of excellent products on the market, such as Net Nanny and McAfee Safe Eyes, which allow parents to monitor Internet use on all devices connected to their home networks. Bear in mind, however, that older children may well be using a mobile network and not always in the home. What do they do when they are visiting or out with friends? Again, the best defence is proactive education and building solid, open relationships with our children, based on partnership, accountability and trust. It is important that children know who to turn to if and when things go wrong, and feel comfortable doing so.
