Clinch Valley Medical Center Annual Community Benefit Report Details Significant Contributions to the Richlands Community

RICHLANDS, Va. --(Business Wire)--

Clinch Valley Medical Center (CVMC) recently released its annual Community Benefit Report to Richlands and surrounding areas. Highlights of the report include key quality and safety initiatives, as well as new physicians and specialty service lines added to better serve the community.

"Clinch Valley is dedicated to providing quality care close to home," said Peter Mulkey, chief executive officer at Clinch Valley Medical Center. "Our hospital leadership, employees, volunteers and physicians are active and engaged in the community, and, as local residents, they have a vested interest in providing high quality care to the people who live and work here. We are focused on continually improving the hospital by investing in new technology and equipment, adding new services and specialties, enhancing quality and safety measures, and recruiting the best medical talent. We are excited to release our Community Benefit Report and share some of the good work taking place at our hospital."

The hospital's accomplishments in 2013 include:

  • Development of a new interventional cardiology lab, which opened in 2013, and more than $2 million in new equipment investments, including a linear accelerator, treatment planning system, and upgraded surgical suites for the Cancer Treatment Center.
  • Recruitment of three new physicians, including specialists in pulmonology, vascular surgery and family medicine, and the acquisition of Clinch alley Physician Associates, a multi-disciplinary physician group with 15 physicians and five nurse practitioners.
  • An affiliation with the Wellmont CVA Heart Institute that provides community members the opportunity to see heart institute physicians for cardiac care at CVMC. This affiliation provides a referral source for CVMC patients into the Wellmont Health System for cardiology care that cannot be provided at CVMC, such as open heart surgery.
  • Participation in LifePoint Hospitals' Hospital Engagement Network (HEN), a national quality effort of the Department of Health and Human Services' (HHS) Partnership for Patients initiative. The goal set by the Partnership for Patients initiative for every HEN is to achieve a 40 percent decrease in hospital-acquired conditions by December 2014. Performance data for LifePoint hospitals, including CVMC, show that the company is well on the way to reaching this goal, having already achieved a 38 percent reduction by the end of the first quarter of 2014, a performance measure significantly better than national benchmarks.

"Clinch Valley is proud to serve the healthcare needs of our community," said Mary Ann Strong, chair of the board of trustees at CVMC. "Our leadership's top priorities are to provide the highest quality care and to contribute to a thriving economy and quality of life in Richlands and southwestern Virginia. We are very pleased with what we have accomplished in 2013."

With an annual payroll of $37 million and more than 600 employees, CVMC is one of the largest employers in the southwestern Virginia region. In addition, CVMC paid more than $512,000 in state sales taxes as well as property taxes in 2013. The hospital also provided more than $3.4 million in charity care to uninsured, low-income patients.

"Clinch Valley is an exemplary model for LifePoint's mission of Making Communities Healthier," said Jeff Seraphine, eastern group president of LifePoint Hospitals. "We know that strong hospitals make strong communities. With an unwavering commitment to the surrounding community, Clinch Valley, will continue to thrive and support the healthcare needs of southwestern Virginia. We are very proud that this hospital is part of the LifePoint family."
