Research and Markets: United Kingdom Retail Pharmacies Market Report 2014

DUBLIN --(Business Wire)--

Research and Markets (http://www.researchandmarkets.com/research/vf5tgw/retail_pharmacies) has announced the addition of the "Retail Pharmacies Market Report 2014" report to their offering.

This Market Report analyses the market for retail pharmacies in the UK. Pharmacies dispense pharmaceutical products, which are available as prescription-only medicines (POM). They also sell over-the-counter (OTC) medicines, in addition to a range of consumer products, including cosmetics and fragrances, toiletries and electronic goods. Community pharmacies also offer services such as advice on giving up smoking, diabetic support services and pregnancy testing.

Retail sales of pharmaceuticals, medical goods and cosmetic and toilet articles grew by 1.2% in 2012 and by 1.6% in 2013 representing weak growth rates compared with years prior to the recession. Pharmacy income has been affected by National Health Service (NHS) funding squeezes in recent yars, which have led to reduced budgets for pharmaceutical services. 90% to 95% of pharmacy incomes originate from NHS pharmaceutical services contract. Meanwhile, the recent economic downturn had changed consumers' shopping habits and negatively impacted sales of OTC products, as well as other items being sold by pharmacies, such as toiletries, cosmetics, fragrances, etc.

The vital role that community pharmacies play in the delivery of primary healthcare is increasingly recognised by the Government and the pharmacy sector itself. The Government wants to expand the role of pharmacists in an effort to ease the burden on the healthcare system brought on by the ageing population and increasing number of people suffering from long-term conditions. In January 2014, the Government launched an advertising campaign to encourage people to seek more help from their local pharmacists. The earlier, the better campaign aims to ease pressure on the NHS's urgent and emergency care system by reducing the number of accident and emergency (A&E) admissions with illnesses which could have been treated earlier by self-care or by pharmacists.

Based on a number of factors including economic conditions and forecasts, the ageing population, and the Government's plan to expand community pharmacy services the authors project that the UK retail pharmacies market will grow by 2% in 2014, followed by further growth of 2.2% in 2015.
