Cyber world is an opportunity not a threat: Rouhani [Tehran Times (Iran)]

(Tehran Times (Iran) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TEHRAN – Iranian President Hassan Rouhani has said that the cyber world should be regarded as an opportunity and not a threat.    Rouhani made the remarks at the Fourth National Information and Communications Technology Festival in Tehran on Saturday.    The Iranian president said that new communications technologies, such as satellite channels, the internet, and mobile phones, should not be considered a threat to the Islamic beliefs of young people.    "I say to all friends that we should trust our young people," he added.    In the area of politics, Iran should only take measures to safeguard its national security and national secrets, and nothing else, he noted.    But in social life, ethics and values must be promoted, he observed.

Rouhani also emphasized that the Islamic Republic recognizes its citizens' right to have access to the international network of information.

"Today, literacy is equivalent to easy access to the large body of information and the internet," he stated.        He added, "Development and the resistance economy cannot be achieved without modern technologies, and on top of that, IT [information technology] and ICT [information and communications technology]."    He also underlined the need to make efforts to create an electronic government and added that the country needs to improve its access to high-speed broadband internet.

He went on to say that the Communications Ministry will take measures to prioritize the development of third and fourth generation networks.

Rouhani also stated that the era of delivering messages through "one-way tribunes" and "one-way speakers" has come to an end, noting that in the modern world, the more widely messages are circulated, the more effectual they are.
