Good moral values the way to go [New Straits Time (Malaysia)](New Straits Time (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) THE Malaysian Crime Prevention Foundation has called for greater effort to strengthen the moral fibre and reinforce the resilience of the young generation so that they will not be involved in cyber crimes. It is essential to protect the young generation from the negative influence that information technology has brought. With the emergence of information and communications technology (ICT) age and smart learning environment, acquiring knowledge and information through computers must be done with adequate moral education. Previously, students obtained information from teachers or textbooks, but now they have access to such information through the Internet. This poses a major challenge to teachers who will have to guide students on ways to access information, evaluate it and derive conclusions from the information received. More emphasis must be given to the inculcation of moral values in education to prevent the emergence of more cyber crime. While we need to produce ICT-savvy and smart workers to ensure the success of the Multimedia Super Corridor, this should be achieved without sacrificing good moral values. Although I subscribe to the principle of no Internet censorship, I am, however, concerned about the easy availability of pornography. I share the view that there is a basis for us to study the possibility of developing some form of filtering system to check the easy flow of pornographic material on the Internet. Now that we have accepted the Internet, cyberspace and online content as our way of life, what needs to be done is to help our young to be more discerning and not fall victims to scams and spam. In line with this, we need to inculcate our children with greater discipline and moral values so that they will be able to decipher what is good and what is bad. This requires an intensive "values for the nation" programme, which should be taught in schools and homes. We also need to strengthen the family institution as the core of a healthy and stable society in the fight against social and moral decay.
