Recycle e-waste, assist church [Athens Daily Review, Texas :: ]

(Athens Daily Review (TX) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) March 14--ATHENS -- Texans turn in more than 38 million pounds of electronics for recycling each year, and people in the Athens area have a chance to have theirs removed at no charge on the pickup date, Friday March 21.

A fundraiser is underway for the St. Edwards Catholic Church, inviting anyone to bring their items to be collected and removed as a service of Texas e-Waste. The list of acceptable electronic items includes cell phones, computers, chargers, lab equipment, toner cartridges, small appliances, televisions, music players, electric motors and more. Pretty much anything that plugs in or takes a battery qualifies, Karen Mondini said.

"The data on your computers will be wiped clean," Mondini said.

The service is tax-deductible, and a receipt will be given for every donation made. Donating the items to be recycled keeps them out of the landfill.

Mondini said Texas e-Waste is working with Hire Patriots, an organization that employs veterans to remove the items. Hire Patriots is a subsidiary of Patriotic Hearts, and provides essential services and assistance to U.S. veterans and their families. Hire Patriots has a 1-day job board to get them connected with those who need their labor.

The collection point for the electronic items is the white building to the east of the church, which is located at 800 E. Tyler St. The church is also receiving items for its garage-sale fundraiser, set for Saturday. Anyone who needs to drop off their electronic items after-hours, or who brings them at a time there is no one from the church present, is welcome to leave their items on the porch for pickup.

Anyone interested can contact Mondini by phoning 903-681-0390, or sending an e-mail to [email protected] ___ (c)2014 the Athens Daily Review (Athens, Texas) Visit the Athens Daily Review (Athens, Texas) at www.athensreview.com Distributed by MCT Information Services
