Online shopping complaints top tally [Global Times]

(Global Times Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Complaints filed from 2011 to 2013 Online shopping, telecommunications and food topped a list of the most complained about industries in Shanghai over the last three years, the city's consumer advocate said Thursday. The Shanghai Consumer Council received more than 30,000 complaints about online shopping last year, more than the number of complaints about telecommunications and food combined, according to an analysis that the council released in the run-up to World Consumer Rights Day on Saturday.Consumers who complained about online shopping were most exasperated with vendors' broken promises, bad after-sales service and product quality issues. The council said it is difficult to protect consumer rights when there is a product quality problem because of the special characteristics of online shopping. Although telecommunications complaints have been steadily declining over the years, the problem of unreasonable charges remains unsolved. Authorities received about 5,300 complaints about telecommunications last year, down 15 percent from 2012. Complaints about the auto industry have been on the rise as more residents buy cars. About 40 percent of complaints against the auto industry took place within the first year of car ownership. The majority were complaints about transmission problems. Some also complained that they had been misled by salespeople trying to persuade them to buy.
