Kilmer announces app competition for Harbor high school students [The Daily World, Aberdeen, Wash. :: ](Daily World, The (Aberdeen, WA) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Feb. 03--Grays Harbor high school students have been invited to compete against other students in Washington's 6th Congressional District in the first annual Congressional Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) Academic Competition, Representative Derek Kilmer announced Friday. Local high school students will compete against other students by creating and exhibiting a software application or "app" for mobile, table, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. Students entering the competition must provide a YouTube video demo explaining their app and what they learned through this competition process. The new nationwide competition is designed to engage students' creativity and encourage their participation in STEM education fields. Throughout the completion period, participating students will be provided opportunities to engage with various STEM educational partners located throughout the community to mentor and assist them with their app development. The submitted apps will be judged by an appointed panel of individuals within the academic, software and entrepreneurial fields. The winning student's app in each participating congressional district will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives' website at www.House.gov, as well as on display in a U.S. Capitol exhibit. Participants may compete individually or in groups of up to four students. For groups of two students at least one must reside in Washington's 6th Congressional District; for groups of three to four at least two must reside in the district. (Students can verify that they live in the district by going to www.pbcelections.org/precinctfinder.aspx or www.browardwoe.org/precinctfinder.aspx and selecting My Districts.) Entries will be judged on quality of idea(including creativity and originality), implementation of the idea(including user experience and design) and demonstrated excellence of coding and programming skills. Instructions are as follows: create an app demonstration video of no more than two minutes that demonstrates the scope and quality of the app. Create a developer video of no more than one minute in which the participant describes how they created the app and what the learned. Then, upload both videos to YouTube or VIMEO and submit the links and an entry form through www.challengepost.com. To submit an entry starting Feb. 1, create an account on www.challengepost.com and register for the House Student App Contest. Students can submit their apps for consideration between Saturday, Feb. 1 at 12 p.m. and Wednesday, April 30 at 12 p.m. For more information contact Rohan in Rep.
