"What does this mean? This means that domain names are going to lose relevance," says Ian Garlic. He believes that the advent of more specific domains, such as .lawyer and .blog, will herald the end of an era in which .com and .org were a badge of "trust" for companies looking to establish themselves online.

"This is not to be confused with domains that have existing content on them, but buying a “fresh” domain without any content just for the name will become useless," he adds.

"[This is] another sign to stop worrying about the technicalities, and start worrying about your story," he also cautions. As an internet marketing expert with vast experience on search engine optimization, he has learned that the key to good marketing is not "securing" that coveted .com -- but having a great, engaging story to tell on it.
