IMTC Launches WebRTC Activity Group Focused on Desktop, Desk Phone and Mobile Device Interoperability

SAN RAMON, Calif., Jun 26, 2013 (PRWeb.com via COMTEX) -- The International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium (IMTC) announces the formation of its Web Real-Time Communications (WebRTC) Activity Group (AG) to study interoperability issues relating to the use of WebRTC from desktop, desk phone, mobile devices, or other devices.

WebRTC is an open source project focused on enabling browser-to-browser applications for voice calling, video chat and P2P file sharing without plugins. The Web Real-Time Communications Working Group of W3C Consortium and the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) are currently working on standards for WebRTC. As the W3C and IETF continue to work on WebRTC standards, it is important for IMTC member companies to understand the impact of WebRTC on their technologies and business.

The IMTC WebRTC Interoperability AG provides a forum for IMTC member companies to cooperate and pool resources on WebRTC interoperability issues of common interest, including enterprise WebRTC (e.g., intra-enterprise, B2B, and B2C communications), interworking of WebRTC and other carrier technologies (3GPP/IMS), and other existing video conferencing systems (SIP and H.323).

"Among the activities the AG plans to undertake are developing an interoperability test framework and conducting IOT events, formulating use cases and conducting a GAP analysis with the SDO use cases, clarifying and defining the interaction of the AG with SDOs such as the SIP Forum and 3GPP/IMS, and agreeing on feature and protocol profiles for WebRTC," said Wu-chi Feng, IMTC Technical Steering Committee Chair. "The group plans to complement the work in related standards organizations and engage the appropriate SDO if issues are identified that are relevant." IMTC will celebrate its 20th anniversary October 8-10, 2013, in Porto, Portugal, with keynote presentations, technology updates and seminars, and innovation showcase. A number of WebRTC presentations and panel discussions are already planned for the agenda and currently include: "Video delivery in WebRTC - VP8, VP9 and beyond" by Jan Linden, Google "WebRTC, audio disaggregation and the need for interoperability in this new environment" by Shantanu Sarkar, Plantronics "WebRTC and the use of video communication in a financial setting" by Pam Ware, Metropolitan Bank For more information on the WebRTC Activity group, visit: http://www.imtc.org/about/structure/imtc-webrtc-interoperability-activity-group-charter/ About the International Multimedia Telecommunications Consortium (IMTC) The IMTC is an industry-leading, non-profit organization whose mission is to promote and facilitate the development and use of interoperable, real-time, multimedia telecommunication products and services based on open international standards.
