BRIEF: HSBC cuts 164 call-center jobs in Chesapeake

CHESAPEAKE, Feb 13, 2013 (The Virginian-Pilot - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- HSBC Card Services plans to close its call center, resulting in 164 job losses, according to the Virginia Workforce Network.

Notice of the closure was posted Tuesday on the website of the network, which provides assistance to companies and workers dealing with layoffs and plant closings.

HSBC slowly has been pulling its operations out of Chesapeake. The company, located on Kristina Way in Greenbrier, employed 1,200 people at its peak in 2007. The center handled collections and took calls from customer credit card holders. By 2011, the number of employees was down to 1,000.

That year, HSBC sold its nationwide credit card operations to Capital One, which retained those Chesapeake employees. HSBC continued to lease space at the same facility and maintained a workforce there to handle collections of delinquent loans and mortgages.

The company has declined to comment on its plans, as did a spokeswoman for Chesapeake's Economic Development Department.
