HTC Said to Sell Smartphones in Myanmar

Jan 14, 2013 (SinoCast Daily Business Beat via COMTEX) -- Foreign media reported today that HTC Corporation would sell smartphones in Myanmar and grasp market share there.

Due to the severe competition with Samsung, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), ZTE Corporation (SZSE: 000063, SEHK: 0763), Huawei Technologies Co., Ltd. and some other mobile phone manufacturers in China, HTC is searching for new markets. HTC's expanding business in Myanmar is expected to spur its interim growth. Myanmar has been opening up to the outer world, so The Coca-Cola Company (NYSE: KO), MasterCard, General Electric Company (NYSE: GE), etc all intend to invest in the country.

Myanmar is one of those Asian countries with the lowest popularization rate of mobile phones. According to consulting company Thura Swiss, Myanmar has a population of about 3 million, of which only 5% are users of mobile phones, and most of the users are using low-end mobile phones. The country only has two mobile operators, Myanmar Posts & Telecommunications and the smaller Yatanarpon Teleport.
