BRIEF: North State Communications selling wireless operations to AT&T

HIGH POINT, Dec 21, 2012 (Winston-Salem Journal - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- North State Communications said Thursday it is selling its wireless operations to AT&T for $23.5 million in cash.

The deal, which is expected to close by June 30, is subject to customary closing conditions, including Federal Communications Commission approval.

North State, based in High Point, has provided wireless services through various joint venture arrangements with AT&T since 1994.

"The wireless sale demonstrates the value that our investments and efforts have produced, and will enable us to strengthen our broadband business and expand our data-center operations," Royster Tucker III, North State's president and chief operating officer.

North State provides fiber-to-the-home and business services such as advanced television, ultra-fast Internet connections, and other IP-based services in the Triad.

In December 2011, North State bought DataChambers, a Winston-Salem data-storage company with two major data centers in Winston-Salem. DataChambers will create its first presence in the Triangle in early 2013 through the purchase and renovation of a former Qwest Communications facility in Raleigh.
