FOOTBALL: Panthers put five on all-district first team

Dec 04, 2012 (Odessa American - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- Permian and Odessa High had a total of 20 players selected to the All-District 2-5A Football Team in a vote among the league's head coaches.

The Panthers, who finished in a third-place tie with a 5-3 district record, had 16 players named either first team, second team or honorable mention. Five seniors made the first team -- safety Clay Adams, offensive tackle Andre Gillette, receiver Andrew Perez, middle linebacker Tanner Vestal and running back Jorrion Wilson.

"I thought we got a good representative number," Permian coach Gary Gaines said. "You'd always like to get more, but when you have a nine-team district, then it's pretty competitive at every position. I'm happy for those that made it." Vestal led the Permian defense with 117 tackles. Adams was the Panthers' interception leader with three and ranked second on the team with 79 tackles.

Gillette, who played right tackle, helped pave the way for an offense that averaged 370.2 total yards per game. Wilson was the district's second-leading rusher during the regular season and finished with 1,591 yards and 20 touchdowns, while Perez was 2-5A's second-leading receiver and finished with 64 catches for 935 yards and five TDs.

"Big time," Gaines said of Perez and Wilson. "They were steady Eddie the whole way through." Quarterback Jack Wilkins, receiver Dez Daniels and left guard Derron Gatewood were Permian's selections on the second-team offense, while defensive end Aaron Chatham, defensive tackle Celso Gomez and outside linebacker Justin Hall made the second-team defense. Center Jordan Medrano, H-back Mikorban Fields, defensive end Josh Ontiveroz, safety Tyler Grizzell and kicker Barron Becker received honorable mention for the Panthers.

Running back C.J. Eddison made the second team for Odessa High, which finished in a seventh-place tie at 1-7. The Bronchos receiving honorable mention were tight end Trent Laake, defensive end Clayton Clair and linebacker Edgar Contrereas.
