Dont link and drive [Malay Mail (Malaysia)]

(Malay Mail (Malaysia) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) KUALA LUMPUR: IS having Internet access in a car another hare- brained idea which will lead to more road accidents? Transport Minister Datuk Seri Kong Cho Ha does not think so, but reminds motorists it is not a licence to surf while behind the wheel.

Instead, he advised drivers to adhere to established guidelines on road safety.

Using screens installed in buses as an example, Kong said electronic devices installed in vehicles were not always for the driver's benefit. Questions were raised regarding the dangers of cars equipped with broadband Internet access after Proton Holdings Bhd recently announced that it would be collaborating with YTL Group's Yes to equipped certain models with high-speed 4G connection.

The sedan, not yet available to the public but currently labelled P3-21A, will be the first to offer Yes as a value-added standard feature.

Five mobile devices will be able to connect to Yes' 4G Internet network via the car's micro-wireless network.

The mobile Internet network provider covers 65 per cent of populated areas in Malaysia but will expand the coverage to 80 per cent.

It also offers coverage along the entire North South Expressway as well as along most of the East Coast expressway.

Kong spoke to the press after officiating the launch of My Lease by DRB-HICOM Leasing Sdn Bhd (DLSB) yesterday.

The DLSB is offering the option of leasing cars as a cheaper alternative to hirepurchasing, which they said would make it easier for companies to obtain fleets of cars.
