Sacked workers to get jobs back [Gulf Daily News (Bahrain)]

(Gulf Daily News (Bahrain) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) A VOW to re-instate private sector workers sacked in connection with the unrest earlier this year was made by Labour Minister Jameel Humaidan yesterday.

It came a day after hundreds of sacked workers and trade unionists marched to the ministry, in Isa Town.

Mr Humaidan claimed that agreements had been reached with employers to take back most workers who were unfairly dismissed.

However, he said sacked workers might have to accept deals with their former employers - such as seeing their salaries deducted for the days they missed work without valid reasons.

He urged them to ignore voices telling them not to accept such terms. "There are odd voices telling sacked employees not to accept any deal," he said.

He was speaking at the 27th honouring ceremony for outstanding private sector employees, held under His Majesty King Hamad's patronage.

"They (those opposed to sacked workers accepting a deal) should stop because we are trying to restore things to normal. Those sacked have been demonstrating regularly in front of the ministry and we have told them that their re-instatement was just a matter of time. We want this issue to be over and are working hard." He was unable to say how many workers in the private sector were still waiting to get their jobs back.

However, he said many companies had co-operated with the ministry and accepted sacked workers back.

The government announced last week that all public sector workers sacked should be back in their posts by the start of next month.

"We want people to get their source of income back," said Mr Humaidan.

"Returning people to work will help fix things, considering that it will bring content to families that have suffered because of it." A total of 112 private sector employees, five leading pioneers, 10 leading administrators and entrepreneurs as well as four companies were honoured during the event at the Gulf Convention and Exhibition Centre, Gulf Hotel.

"Here we are celebrating a special occasion and honouring outstanding employees who have worked to help Bahrain recover from the effects of the early months of the year and ensure growth and development continues," said Mr Humaidan.

"We thank all those who have dedicated time for the sake of the nation, ensuring division and sectarianism didn't damage unity in workplaces. Yes, we had tough times, but employees have shown that they care about the success of their establishments regardless of any situation." He said the February-March events hindered efforts to maintain a solid labour market and provide job opportunities. "This market as any other gets affected by problems in the country and we have tried our best to minimise damage." He said the country had carried out training, rehabilitation and employment programmes to develop the Bahraini workforce.

Mr Humaidan added unions were vital for securing better working conditions. "We will continue working with the General Federation of Bahrain Trade Unions and the Bahrain Chamber of Commerce and Industry for the good of everyone - it means that no one gets affected." On behalf of the employees, Dr Ahmed Al Ka'abi said Bahrainis were key to the labour market. Mr Humaidan and Under-Secretary Sabah Al Dossary presented commemorative gifts and cash awards to employees.
