HP TouchPad takes tablet spotlight [Independent Television News Limited (UK)]

(Independent Television News Limited (UK) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Over a year after Apple launched the market leading iPad, the spotlight is upon personal computing giant Hewlett-Packard.

The firm releases its own tablet device in the UK on Friday called the TouchPad.

Using the multi-platform operating system WebOS, built by recent acquisition Palm, the touchscreen device offers consumers an alternative to Apple's iOS, Goggle's Android and BlackBerry OS.

Starting from £399, the touchscreen gadget can sync information with WebOS phones without the use of wires or even pressing buttons. But, the lack of available apps has raised concerns.

However, HP says there has been a lot of interest from developers keen to create apps for WebOS.

The firm also says the user experience will be more task orientated.

"It's truly multi-tasking so rather than stowing things and going to something else you are actually just going between applications and you can see that they can all be open at the same time," said Richard Kerris, from HP's Worldwide Developer Relations.

"The TouchPad is earning high marks for its hardware and ability to multi-task, which lets users jump around on applications, including the Facebook and Angry Bird apps," he added.

The TouchPad is the company's first device to use WebOS - acquired as part of the $1.2 billion acquisition of Palm last year.
