D2 Technologies Leads New OESF Working Group in Push to Enhance Google's Android Platform for Unified IP Communications and VoIP

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- D2 Technologies (News - Alert), the market leader in embedded IP communications software platforms, today announced that it has joined the Open Embedded Software Foundation (OESF), an organization dedicated to furthering the adoption of Google's Android (News - Alert) platform for use in applications beyond mobile phones. Additionally, D2 is the lead member of a new OESF working group established to enhance Android for IP communications by defining standard extensions and APIs to deliver support for new unified communications modes such as VoIP, video calling, instant messaging and presence.

The OESF IP Communications Working Group will stage its first demonstration of the Android platform enhanced for IP communications and VoIP at Embedded Technology 2009, sponsored by the Japan Embedded Systems Technology Association, at the Pacifico Yokohama convention complex November 18-20, 2009.

"In this working group, D2, other industry leaders and OESF members will develop and promote the adoption of IP communications and VoIP extensions to the Android framework so that new communication modes can be easily accommodated," said Doug Makishima (News - Alert), chief operating officer at D2 Technologies and coordinator of the OESF IP Communications Working Group. "By focusing our work group on the IP communications needs of new products and devices such as IP media phones, digital photo frames (DPF), MIDs, DTV/STBs and connected home products, we can help the OESF achieve its overarching goal of moving the Android platform beyond mobile phones to many different embedded applications and electronics devices for consumers, carriers and enterprises. Ultimately, this will benefit the OEM or ODM by delivering the power of the Android platform along with important necessary enhancements for converged communications." Developed by the Open Handset Alliance, the Android platform is a Linux-based software stack for mobile devices that includes an operating system, middleware and key applications. D2 Technologies was the first to demo a converged IP communications client, mCUE™, on the HTC (News - Alert) G1, the first commercial smartphone based on the Android mobile operating system.

About the OESF Formed in March 2009, the 25-member Open Embedded Software Foundation (OESF) is focused on expanding market reach for the Android platform. Founded by ARM, KDDI, Japan Cable Laboratories, Alpine Electronics and Fujitsu (News - Alert) Software, the organization works with member companies on sharing technical information, co-development and co-marketing initiatives. The OESF and its member companies are working on standards and development of Android for embedded equipment such as consumer electronics and in-car navigation systems other than mobile phones.
