Honduras' freedom of speech under attack: UNTEGUCIGALPA, Aug 04, 2009 (Xinhua via COMTEX) -- Honduras' interim government was accused by the UN on Tuesday of limiting freedom of speech in order to silence opposition. UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Expression Franck La Rue told Radio Globo that the interim government in the country was "a dictatorial government, a de facto government which is closing the spaces of the democracy." Radio Globo is one of the biggest critics of the interim government, which has accused it of rebellion and threatened to cancel its transmission. According to La Rue, "the important thing is to have different opinions" and he condemned the possible closing of the radio station. The interim government recently closed TV channel 36, another of its strong critics. "This is aggression against the media," said La Rue, who arrived in Honduras on Saturday to investigate freedom of speech in the country. |
