Student killed on his way to first day at university

(Leicester Mercury Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) An 18-year-old man from Leicester died in a motorway crash as he travelled to study at university for the first time.

Anil Pabari was killed after the silver Honda Civic he was a passenger in left the M1 at about 10.40am on Monday.

It is not clear how the accident happened but the vehicle crashed on to its roof after rolling down an embankment between junction 22 at Markfield and junction 23, near Shepshed.

Mr Pabari, a former pupil of Rushey Mead School, in Melton Road, was making his way to Sheffield Hallam University to begin his studies.

The driver and a second passenger were also seriously injured in the accident.

They are being treated in Leicester Royal Infirmary, where police say their condition is stable.

Police closed the northbound section of the road for four hours, and then had a rolling road block until 4pm.

The fatal crash followed two other incidents in the same area of the county.

Mr Pabari's family were too distraught to speak to the media yesterday.

However, family friend Narandas Adatia, an ex-president of the Shree Ram Mandir temple, in Hildyard Road, where the family worship, visited to offer his condolences.

Mr Adatia, 78, said: "The entire community is in shock.

"I went round to try to offer some comfort. They are so depressed and crying. It is a very difficult time.

"He was going up to university for the first time when it happened.

"He had been before to sort out renting his room and all that, but this was the first time he had gone to study.

"Last time he had gone with his parents, but this time a friend offered him a lift.

"I just pray to the Almighty that he welcomes this youth and offers comfort to the family." Belgrave councillor Rashmikant Joshi said the bereavement would be especially hard for the family to deal with because it came just before a 15-day Hindu festival where families remember their ancestors.

He said: "When I heard this tragic news, it sent a real shock through my body.

"It is really so sad to hear such a young life has been lost, especially at this time of the year.

"My thoughts and condolences go out to the family."
