Personal computer maker Dell has integrated Intel’s (News - Alert) quad-core version of its Xeon chip into server computers and a quad-core version of the Core 2 Extreme chip into high-end desktop computers. The microchips aim to enhance performance and energy performance with four processing cores.

The server computers are indispensable for running business networks while high-end desktop computers handle heavy-duty computing such as graphics and 3-D modeling.

Dell (News - Alert) has opted for the Intel chips mainly because of their power and proficiency. The microchips have got two dual-core chips coupled together in a single package.

In quad-core chip segment, Intel is facing stiff competition from its rival Advanced Micro Devices (News - Alert) Inc. Intel, in fact, launched its quad-core chips ahead of schedule to stay ahead of AMD.

However, AMD is not sitting idle at all. The company will introduce a quad-core chip by the middle of next year. AMD claims that its quad-core chip will perform better than Intel’s, as all the cores will be on a single piece of silicon.

Meanwhile, Dell is set to introduce its first business desktop computer with AMD processors. The decision comes after Dell terminated its exclusive relationship with Intel earlier this year.
